Mesothelioma Awareness
Awareness groups and doctors around the country continually strive to increase public awareness about mesothelioma cancer. Due to the root cause of this disease being exposure to asbestos, it is very preventable. Some of the events and groups that have been created for the specific purpose of speaking about the risks of mesothelioma and asbestos exposure are detailed below.
International Symposium on Malignant Mesothelioma
Each year in June in Washington D.C., the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation (MARF) holds the International Symposium on Malignant Mesothelioma in order to enable patients and their caregivers to meet and share their experiences.
International Mesothelioma Program
In response to the rising incidence of mesothelioma, Dr. David J. Sugarbaker founded the International Mesothelioma Program at Brigham and Women's Hospital to provide treatment, research and support to patients and their families. Built on the principles of mesothelioma research, the International Mesothelioma Program focuses on developing the newest treatments for patients.
Mesothelioma Awareness Day
Each year, MARF has pushed to make a national event called Mesothelioma Awareness Day in order to spread knowledge of this rare disease. In order to do this, a number of resolutions must be passed in Congress and local governments around the United States must acknowledge this day as a state holiday.
MARF intends to use the music of legendary rock singer/songwriter Warren Zevon to spread the word on September 26th. The campaign, called "Let's Rock," asks local radio stations around the country to play his music followed by a 20 second buffer talking about the risks of the disease. Warren Zevon was afflicted with mesothelioma and passed away in 2003.
In 2009, Senator Patty Murray (WA) and Congresswoman Betty McCollum (WN-4) introduced proposals to Congress to make September 26 "National Mesothelioma Awareness Day." On November 29, 2010 Mesothelioma Awareness Day was recognized as a national day with the passing of the resolution in Congress put forth by MARF and the Senator Murray and Congresswoman McCollum.
Due to the passing of the resolution in Congress, local and state governments can receive informational materials and funding from MARF and the federal government about this day. The annual observance of this day will greatly increase the awareness of the general public as well as help raise funds for further research into creating new treatment options.
